York (Toronto)’s War of 1812 Garrison Flag

The British Royal Standard flown by the office of the Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada from 1801-1813, until captured by American forces during the occupation of York (now Toronto), on April 27, 1813.

The flag is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In April 2018, it was removed from its case for restoration.

During the viewing ceremony, American, Canadian, and British naval officers formally spoke about the history of the flag and the conflict. The size of the thing – simply stunning!
